Network carrier and data center services provider Level 3 has launched a data center in Omaha, Nebraska, pitching it as a good alternative or complement to data center infrastructure on both US coasts, as well as a destination for data center consolidation.

Level 3 said it chose Omaha because of its low risk for natural disasters and low power rates. The new data center is located within the Scott Data Center complex.

The data center’s infrastructure has been certified to meet Tier III reliability requirements by the Uptime Institute. Mike Benjamin, VP of data center product management at Level 3, said customers today needed more redundancy in power and cooling systems, which was expensive to do on their own.

“With this new facility, we can offer customers all of these benefits while minimizing the financial burden of owning and maintaining their own facility,” he said.

Level 3 has more than 350 data centers in North America, Europe and Latin America. The company also operates a global network that consists of 165,000 miles of intercity, metro and submarine fiber routes.
