Japanese data center services provider KVH has began construction of a second data center in the Tokyo market.

When initially brought online, TDC2 will add about 43,000 square feet of rack-floor space to the Tokyo market.

The company expects the first phase to launch by February 2011.

The future facility is located in Inzai, a Chiba Prefecture city near Tokyo.

KVH said in a news release that the site has room to expand the data center to accommodate a total of about 172,000 square feet of server floor.

The standard colocation offering will provide rack densities of about 6 kW, but there will be supplemental cooling options to expand density up to 20 kW per rack.

In total, the facility is being built to support 8 MW of IT load.

"KVH realizes that in a world of ever increasing computing capabilities, power, not space, is the critical and scarce resource within the data center facility," CEO Miyuki Suzuki said in a statement.

"KVH's TDC2 has been designed to push the limits on power with the goal of satisfying customers' current and future power needs."

The design incorporates waterside economization, which can be used for free cooling from fall through spring and other energy-saving features.

Tokyo-based KVH is planning to achieve Power Usage Effectiveness ratio of less than 1.5.

A new high-speed train link, currently being built, will allow for a 40 minute commute between Inzai and central Tokyo business district.

The link is expected to open in July of this year.
