Keppel is partnering with Amazon Web Services (AWS) on digital infrastructure and energy efforts, and is migrating to the latter's cloud.

The companies this week signed a strategic framework agreement to collaborate on data centers, subsea cables, and renewable energy.

As part of the agreement, Keppel has selected AWS as its preferred cloud provider and will collaborate with AWS to support the integration of the AWS Bedrock platform across its AI and machine learning business areas.

Keppel and AWS will collaborate on accelerating generative AI innovation, including a series of workshops to design an AI Platform to accelerate Keppel’s growth strategy.

The companies also plan to develop new subsea cable systems to support AWS’s global network. Keppel is currently developing the Bifrost Cable System, a trans-Pacific cable system connecting Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, the United States (Guam, Grover Beach, Winema), and Mexico.

In addition, the partners will work on expanding sustainable data center infrastructure worldwide. This will include identifying suitable land for new data centers and providing low-carbon or access to renewable energy to power the data centers' operations.

"This strategic agreement with Keppel marks a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainable digital innovation across Southeast Asia and beyond," said Jeff Johnson, ASEAN managing director, AWS.

Keppel’s agreement with AWS reinforces its commitment to expand its data center offering. In October, the company announced its intention to double its data center capacity from 650MW to 1.2GW in the near term.

The company has around 200MW of capacity in Singapore, 350MW across the rest of APAC (Australia, Japan, China, and Malaysia), and 100MW in Europe (UK, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and the Netherlands).

Keppel has also committed to double its energy supply to 3GW by 2030 through power generation and regional importation to support the growing energy demand within the Singaporean market.

As a result, Keppel has signed several clean energy agreements over 2024. The most notable was in the hydrogen sector, where the company signed a conditional offtake term sheet to supply and purchase liquid hydrogen from Woodside. The supply agreement aims to power Keppel’s data center portfolio in Singapore.

AWS has significantly bolstered its presence in the Singapore market over recent years. In May, the company committed to investing $9 billion in cloud computing infrastructure in Singapore. This will add to the $8.5bn the company has already invested in the Asia Pacific Region up to 2023 and will bring its total planned spend to more than $17bn by 2028.
