Italian telecommunications provider Italtel has designed and deployed a data center at the University of Pisa, in an area owned by the university in the Regional Park of Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli, about 8km from the city center.
Linked to the university by a fiber optic ring, the facility spans 250 sq m (2,690 sq ft), and was built with sustainability in mind - the company claims a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) value of 1.17.
Keeping it green
“Because of their requirements for continuous power and air conditioning, data centers are traditionally associated with very high levels of energy consumption,” Fiorenzo Piergiacomi, the head of the public sector account unit at Italtel, said.
“By choosing to create a green data center, the University of Pisa has reduced its environmental impact while also optimizing the available space and cutting ongoing maintenance costs.”
The project was implemented by Italtel, and partners Westsystems and Webkorner, in eight months, and the site could be expanded in the future using modular data center components.
