Following the Intel Developers Forum in Beijing, the press wires have been abuzz with speculation that Intel is currently in the throes of a major data center consolidation program.
Intel's plans were discussed by two executives, Martin Menard (director of platform capability) and James Chen (director IT consulting services) in a presentation on the company's data center infrastructure at the China-held event.
According to ZDNet blogger Larry Dignan, who covered the event, Intel currently has 136 data centers around the world, with 62 percent of those being at least a decade old. Consolidation of this network would involve the elimination of scores of older data centers and the centralization of servers in huge new facilities with power and cooling management at their heart.
