Energy storage company Calibrant Energy has partnered with data center developer Iron Mountain to deploy a 23MWh on-site battery energy storage system at the latter’s New Jersey data center.
Calibrant will integrate the battery unit with a 7.2MW rooftop solar installation in operation at the facility.
“This is what the future of powering large loads looks like,” said Phil Martin, CEO of Calibrant Energy. “Customers can grow and control costs while strengthening the grid, proving that large power users are part of the energy solution rather than a burden.”
According to the company, advanced real-time controls will enable the battery to act as a dynamic asset that stabilizes regional grid infrastructure during peak demand.
“Battery storage is a critical component of our broader strategy to support the local energy ecosystem,” added Chris Pennington, senior director of energy and sustainability at Iron Mountain. “Flexible, on-site assets like this improve the economic and operational efficiency of the local utility grid, in addition to supporting increased reliability for all electric consumers. This project demonstrates how the data center industry can bring solutions to emerging grid challenges.”
Iron Mountain’s New Jersey data center is located in Edison and spans approximately 830,000 sq ft (77,110 sqm) across a 43-acre campus. The data center has 30MW of capacity and houses more than 180 customers, including 20+ carriers.
Iron Mountain has around 415MW of colocation and hyperscale capacity in 21 markets across seven countries and three continents. The company said its data center portfolio has a potential capacity of nearly 1.3GW.
Calibrant has partnered with a number of data center providers to deploy on-site battery storage. Last October, the company partnered with Aligned Data Centers to deploy a 31MW/62MWh BESS system at one of the data center company’s campuses.
Before this, in August, the company energized three front-of-the-meter BESS in New York in collaboration with CoreSite. The BESS will provide 13.5MW, or 55.7MWh, of dispatchable capacity to the Con Edison grid in New York. It will be used by CoreSite and a leading hospital institution via Value of Distributed Energy Resources credits.
