Italian infrastructure company Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane (Inwit) is in talks with CK Hutchison Holdings to acquire data centers and telephone exchanges worth approximately €100 million ($117m).

As reported by Il Messaggero, Inwit is poised to make a binding offer for the assets of Wind Tre, the Italian operator of CK Hutchison, this week.

Inwit specializes in operating telecom tower infrastructure across Italy.

A potential move to operating data centers would represent a new avenue for the company, in the same way other traditional tower companies have pivoted to data centers, notably American Tower in the US.

Il Messaggero reports that CK Hutchison could retain a minority stake in the data center assets or the company to which they will be transferred.

It comes as Inwit is locked in a public spat with Italian carriers 'Fastweb + Vodafone' and Telecom Italia as the two telcos look to exit long-term tower lease agreements in an effort to form a tower-focused joint venture.

The two telcos have signed an agreement for the development and management of up to 6,000 new mobile phone towers under the JV.

Inwit has said it will challenge Fastweb + Vodafone and Telecom Italia's (TIM) plans to terminate their respective tower agreements, noting that TIM has "no legal grounds" to terminate its contract in 2030, while calling Fastweb + Vodafone's plans "unlawful."

Inwit currently operates around 26,000 towers in Italy.
