Interxion has signed up to use 100% renewable energy at its London data center.

 

UK provider SmartestEnergy will supply the power for Brick Lane facility. It uses renewable sources including wind, hydropower and biomass and Good Quality CHP (combined heat and power).

 

Interxion managing director for the UK Greg McCulloch said the company has already started introducing renewable energy to some of its other European colocation data centers, which are based in 11 countries across Europe.

 

Its Brussels facility is its latest to have moved on to renewable energy.

 

"We are passionate about making our extensive European network of data centers as sustainable as possible, and the changes to our UK energy supply simply reinforce our commitment to the green agenda," McCulloch  said.

 

"We aim to stay ahead of the game when it comes to ongoing political discussions around the reduction of CO2 emissions – working with groups like the Green Grid and the Uptime Institute to set clear standards and best practice within the industry."

 

Interxion said in choosing to go renewable, it looks for providers with a clear audit trail and relevant renewable certificates from Renewable Energy guarantees of Origin.

 

SmartestEnergy purchases power from 500 independent power producers across the UK, and currently provides 10% of all renewable electricity generated in the UK.
