Like in US, demand for data center space in Europe is growing and colocation companies that have the resources are investing in future expansion plans to capitalize on the trends.
Large European data center colocation provider Interxion has acquired a greenfield site for future data center development in eastern Frankfurt. The company tentatively expects to start developing the site after it completes an ongoing data center construction project in Frankfurt. FRA 6 is scheduled for commissioning in the third quarter of 2010.
The undeveloped site can accommodate a data center whose size is about 160,000 sq ft. If the company builds a facility at the site, its Frankfurt footprint will double to more than 320,000 square feet of gross space. By intensifying its expansion plans in Frankfurt, Interxion is betting on high demand it currently observes in the market from the financial and carrier industries.
"Forward planning is vital if you want to keep a few steps ahead of customer requirements in the current buoyant market," Interxion Germany Managing Director Peter Knapp said in a statement. "While we have already accelerated up the build-out program in Frankfurt to meet customer demand, we may need to accelerate it even further. In the past months we have experienced a strong uptake in data centre demand, especially from the financial and carrier sectors."
Interxion currently operates about 590,000 square feet of data center space in Europe. Of that space, about 125,000 square feet was brought online in 2009 in response to demand. The company is in the process of building out new space in Zurich, Paris and Dublin.
