Intel Corp. currently uses more green energy than any other single organization in the US to power its American operations, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Intel used about 2.5bn kWh of solar and wind power to power 88% of its US operations as of early January. This earned it the top position on the EPA’s National Top 50 list of the nation’s largest green-energy users.

The list includes both private and public organizations. The top five organizations following Intel on the chart are, in descending order, Kohl’s, Wal-Mart, Whole Foods, Johnson & Johnson and the City of Houston, Texas.

The chart only ranks companies’ US operations and green energy purchased within the country.

Intel’s solar and wind power comes partially from on-site generation and partially from two outside suppliers: Sterling Planet and PNM.

Within the US, the company has solar arrays at its campuses in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Oregon, according to its 2010 Corporate Responsibility Report.
