The following content is from an older version of this website, and may not display correctly.Intel announced the general availability of Data Center Manager, a software development kit that helps monitor and manage data center power consumption.
The development kit is aimed at users, software vendors and systems integrators for integration into consoles or command line applications to provide power and thermal monitoring and management for servers, racks and groups of servers in data centers.
"This tool offers custom flexibility and real-time control to empower IT administrators to increase rack density, appropriately manage power and cooling infrastructure, and ultimately conserve energy and reduce costs," the company said. Features include Built-in policy based intelligent heuristics engine to maintain group power capping while dynamically adapting to changing server loads and minimizing performance impact of workloads using Intel Intelligent Power Node Manager for node power and thermal management. The software development kit integrates into existing management software products by means of a web service application programming interface.
The system is designed for use with the new 5500 processor series based servers but the company said Chinese search engine Baidu, the largest search company in China, used the system to maximize its rack densities under a power limit agreement of 10 A per rack or 2.2 KW at 220 V from its carrier hotel. Because racks were power limited, a significant amount of rack space couldn't be used without hitting power envelope limits . Since Baidu is also billed by the rack, Baidu is highly motivated to maximize the number of servers per rack while staying within the 10 A current limit.
