Intel is engaged in talks with SambaNova regarding a possible acquisition of the AI solutions provider, Bloomberg has reported.
The news follows a separate report earlier this week that claimed SambaNova is exploring a sale, having struggled to complete a fundraising round.
Per the Bloomberg report, Intel is discussing the terms of a potential acquisition, but noted that talks were still in their early stages and there’s no certainty the companies will reach an agreement. The sources cited by the news outlet additionally noted that another buyer could also emerge.
SambaNova was valued at $5 billion in 2021, having raised more than $1.1bn in funding from investors since its inception. However, the company’s value has reportedly decreased over the past four years, and any deal to sell SambaNova is likely to value the company below $5bn.
Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Palo Alto, California, SambaNova previously focused on training workloads, but pivoted earlier this year to being an AI cloud services provider. Its Suite product is touted as an on-prem or cloud-based offering that allows companies to train their own generative AI models based on popular foundation models.
The company first unveiled its SambaNova Cloud in September 2024. It provides cloud-based AI inference services using the company’s SN40L AI chip, launched in September 2023 and capable of running models with up to five trillion parameters.
