Intel has named Pushkar Ranade as its new chief technology officer, formalizing the position he has held on an interim basis since December.

Ranade, who has worked at Intel for more than a decade, took over the role following the departure of Sachin Katti in November of last year.

Katti left Intel just six months after accepting the role of chief technology and AI officer, joining OpenAI as the company’s head of compute. In a statement announcing the new appointment, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan named Ranade’s official job title as just chief technology officer.

Prior to taking up the interim position, Ranade was serving as chief of staff and technology advisor to the CEO, a role Tan said he will continue in order to ensure “strong alignment between Intel’s technology strategy and business priorities.”

Tan went on to say: “As CTO, Ranade will advance the company’s technology strategy, lead special technology projects, and drive the development of critical emerging areas, including quantum computing, neuromorphic computing, photonics, and novel materials.”

Intel also announced this week that it had hired former Qualcomm executive Alex Katouzian to oversee its client computing and physical AI group. In his new role, Katouzian will align Intel’s client computing business with emerging physical AI systems that span robotics, autonomous machines, and other AI devices, the chipmaker said.

Katouzian will join Intel this month, and both he and Ranade will report directly to Tan.
