Tilera, the Silicon Valley maker of many-core processors, has raised an additional US$45m to fund further growth. The company said it was currently operating "near break-even" and expected to become profitable later this year.

The new round of financing, led by Artis Capital Management, included both new investors and investors that funded the company in the previous financing round. The new investors, among banking firms, included Cisco and Samsung.

Technology companies that have previously invested in Tilera included Broadcom, NTT's financing arm and Quanta, all of which also participated in this financing round.

Troy Bailey, Tilera's VP of marketing, said Cisco and Samsung's cash-backed interest is "an indication that Tilera has interesting and important technology."

Tilera and Quanta, a Taiwanese IT vendor, put a 512-core server on the market last year called TilePro. The chipmaker's next step is to release the Tile-Gx family, which will include a 100-core processor.

Voxel raises outside capital, hires new CEO
Provider of cloud-based and managed services Voxel has raised its first capital from outside investors but stopped short of saying how much. The company also announced appointment of a new CEO.

Voxel spokesman Zachary Smith said the company will announce the total raise amount once the deal is finalized in about two weeks.

Investment banking firm DH Capital helped Voxel with both recruiting the new leader and raising the cash. The new CEO Raul Martynek, former senior advisor to telecom- and infrastructure-focused hedge fund Plainfield Asset Management.

Martynek's other recent job was chief restructuring officer at Smart Telecom, an Irish exchange carrier. Martynek is replacing Voxel's founder and previous CEO Raj Dutt, who will be taking the role of the company's CTO.

Martynek's past positions included COO and then CEO of Eureka Networks, a telecom that was acquired by Broadview in 2007.
