Factory revenue in the worldwide server market saw the fastest quarterly revenue growth in the second quarter since 2003, according to a new report by IDC. This was the second consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth, with factory revenue increasing 11 percent to $10.9bn.

Matt Eastwood, Enterprise Platforms group VP at IDC, said the server market was at a crossroads, with the fourth consecutive quarter of demand growth and the fastest quarterly revenue growth the IT research firm had reported in more than five years.

\"IDC continues to see widespread infrastructure refresh occurring across all geographies,\" Eastwood said in a statement. \"While much of this refresh is occurring first in x86-based servers, IDC expects the recovery to extend to Unix and mainframe platforms in the second half of 2010.

\"That said, it is clear that a wave of migration is also occurring as customers broaden their deployment of x86-based servers to a wider range of workloads.\"

Market demand continued to improve around the world. Unit shipments increased 23.8 percent year-over-year in the second quarter, which was an improvement in growth from a 23 percent year-over-year increase reported in the first quarter.

The biggest improvement was experienced by volume systems, increasing 31.7 percent year-over-year, a third consecutive quarter of positive growth in the segment.
