Weeks after IBM announced it was to invest over US$1 billion in addressing energy efficiency within the data center, the company has expanded the functionality of it Zodiac consultancy.
Using an IBM database, the company's servers are interrogated to establish their total power consumption and carbon footprint. Carbon footprint statistics are provided to help users improve the efficiency of their data center and to offset carbon emissions.
According to IBM, the data provided is used to determine a strategy for reducing power consumption and environmental impact. And may include measures such as server consolidation, ensuring that hardware is being run close to full capacity and at maximum efficiency.
