Many US companies, including some data center providers and vendors, have postponed announcements of third-quarter earnings due to severe weather conditions caused by Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall in the US Northeast Monday evening.

Data center provider Equinix – whose Manhattan data center experienced an outage caused by flooding – IT outsourcer SunGard and generator vendor Cummins all cancelled their financial-results releases originally scheduled for Tuesday.

Equinix moved its announcement date to 1 November, while Cummins and SunGard both rescheduled their earnings releases to 31 October.

Many companies outside of the data center and IT industry have also postponed releasing their financial results for the third quarter because of the hurricane, which was expected to cause two days of extreme weather in the Northeast. Reuters has a list of these firms.

Major Wall Street trading floors - the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ - were shut down on Monday and Tuesday, expecting to resume operation Wednesday. NYSE Euronext CEO Duncan Niederauer said in a statement released Tuesdsay, "Our building and systems were not damaged, and our people have been working diligently to ensure that we have a smooth opening tomorrow."

Equinix’ NY9 data center in New York City was one of multiple Manhattan data centers to have experienced outages caused by flooding. NY9 is located within the large Google-owned carrier hotel at 111 8th Ave.

A back-up generator at this site was damaged, leaving the data center without a power supply once the utility switched off power on the island. The generator was fixed and the data center was back up by Tuesday morning, Equinix said.

Data centers at 75 Broad St. and 121 Varick St. also experienced outages.

All Equinix sites in the New York-New Jersey region, as well as Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., lost utility power and were switched to backup generators.
