Continuing its reorganization efforts, HP has appointed Bill Veghte as its new COO. Until now, Veghte has lead HP’s Software business, a responsibility being taken over by George Kadifa, who comes to HP from Silver Lake, a large technology investment firm, where he was an operating partner.

Veghte will report to HP CEO Meg Whitman, who praised the results he delivered while at HP Software and in helping the company execute its overall strategy. “With Bill‘s additional responsibilities, I am confident we can accelerate progress across our portfolio of assets,” Whitman said.

Prior to joining HP in 2010, Veghte spent about 20 years at Microsoft, moving from a Microsoft Office product-manager position up to executive VP of Software and Solutions, according to his LinkedIn profile.

George Kadifa, Veghte’s replacement at the helm of HP Software, comes to HP from a global investment firm with more than US$14bn under management. In his role on the company’s Value Creation Team, he was responsible for driving operational improvement and growth in a 24-company portfolio.

Operational improvements have been on HP’s mind as of late. Exactly one week ago, when Whitman announced a restructuring plan that included 27,000 layoffs, she also said the company would be letting Mike Lynch, founder of its subsidiary Autonomy, go.

Autonomy had delivered poor results for the second fiscal quarter, and Whitman said its management structure was not ready for the next stage of growth.

Since HP bought Autonomy in 2011, Lynch had been in charge of HP’s Information Management unit, which falls under the company’s Software business. While overall Q2 software revenue grew 22% year over year, Autonomy “saw a significant decline in license revenue,” HP said.

The most recent restructuring program is expected to save up to US$3.5bn, Whitman said.

HP announced one more executive appointment Wednesday, moving its executive VP of global sales Jan Zadak to the role of president for HP Enterprise Services in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
