HPE has this week announced the launch of the Quantum Scaling Alliance (QSA), a consortium comprising eight companies, including HPE, working to drive the mainstream adoption of quantum technology.

Overseen by Dr. Masoud Mohseni from HPE Labs and co-led by 2025 Nobel Laureate John Martinis, the consortium brings together companies from the quantum, HPC, and semiconductor industries with the aim of designing and developing a practically useful and cost-effective quantum supercomputer.

The Alliance’s eight founding members are 1QBit, Applied Materials, HPE, Qolab, Quantum Machines, Riverlane, Synopsys, and the University of Wisconsin. Martinis co-founded Qolab with other former Google executives in 2022 and currently serves as CTO.

No timeline for the consortium’s goals has been published, but the group said its aims include aligning quantum innovation across existing semiconductor and supercomputing ecosystems, and sharing resources to overcome barriers to adoption. QSA is also open to exploring additional partnership opportunities or working with contributing experts to help move quantum computing forward.

“Quantum computers hold the key to transforming industries through their unique ability to tackle intrinsically quantum problems,” said Martinis. “By harnessing quantum systems, we can achieve breakthroughs in areas ranging from semiconductor manufacturing to sustainable fertilizer production—solving challenges previously thought insurmountable.”

Mohseni added: “For quantum to succeed as a viable long-term computing paradigm, it must scale by integrating with classical supercomputing systems. The Quantum Scaling Alliance is offering a full-stack solution—a large partnership with horizontal integration that unlocks compute potential that is otherwise unachievable through a vertical approach.”
