HP announced Tuesday an upcoming software upgrade to its FlexFabric core switches that will enable workloads to move seamlessly among up to eight separate data centers.
Called Ethernet Virtual Interconnect (EVI), the solution will make interconnectivity between geographically dispersed data centers simpler and quicker by automating what have traditionally been manual configuration tasks.
Bethany Mayer, senior VP and general manager of networking at HP, said customers wanted the ability to move virtual machines and data services across the enterprise. “HP’s unique virtualization technologies meet that need, helping clients to significantly increase their agility and innovate at a pace their organizations demand.”
EVI was part of a three-product virtualization-software announcement from HP. The other two were Multitenant Device Context (MDC) and StoreVirtual, a virtual storage appliance.
Both EVI and MDC will be available as FlexFabric core-switch software upgrades this fall, HP said. StoreVirtual will be available in September.
The MDC software compartmentalizes environments for multiple enterprise departments running in a Cloud on a shared infrastructure. At the same time, the solution reduces the number of networking devices required in a data center.
The StoreVirtual virtual storage appliance enables customers to build storage pools on any x86 server using either VMware vSphere or Windows Server Hyper-V hypervisors. This gives them the ability to move data across different servers, hypervisors and data center locations.
