The convergence push continues apace with HP announcing it can now let users map energy use across the data center based on component level power management up to 'grid level' visibility of where power is going in the facility.

At the start of its Tech Forum in Las Vegas, the firm announced HP Intelligent Power Discovery management technology that its says automates an energy-aware network between IT systems and third-party facility management tools.

Using its own Power Distribution Unit (PDU), and Platinum branded power supplies along with HP Insight Control software integrated with monitoring software from nlyte and Forseer branded software from Eaton the company says it will provide a graphical map of power usage across the data center.

The company say that the products can deliver reclamation of millions of dollars in wasted power capacity.

Vendor collaborations such as those with nlyte and Eaton mean  HP ProLiant server users gain increased insight into power usage, and more accurately deploy power - avoiding overprovisioning, the company says, claiming that per 1,000 servers using its technology potential savings are $5 million per year.

This has the potential to save clients up to $5 million per every 1,000 servers in one year.(3)

According to a company statement: 'The system works through automatic verification of power redundancy and identification of proper connections and preventing errors in electrical configurations. It further identifies equipment connections and potential circuit overloads to eliminate human errors in power distribution. HP Intelligent Power Discovery provides a real-time, graphical map of total energy usage across the data center and facilities.'

'Analytics are obtained by measuring power and heat at peak load and at rest. Measurement cycles every half second are faster than any other solution on the market today to optimize energy use per server. The system provides a view of each server's physical location, the server rack and an analysis of power, thermal and electrical configurations. Data collected by HP Intelligent Power Discovery is communicated to HP Insight Control's power management software, as well as third-party facility management tools.'

The new HP Intelligent Power Discovery is available in HP ProLiant DL series G7 servers, with prices starting at Ôé¼1,085 and Ôé¼2,040, which vary based on specific configurations.
HP Intelligent PDU pricing starts at Ôé¼840 depending on configuration, while HP Insight Control software is available from Ôé¼375.
