HP has closed its $2.7-billion acquisition of network equipment maker 3Com, first announced in November 2009.
The buyer will integrate 3Com's switching, routing and security products with its existing ProCurve networking solutions to provide a "comprehensive portfolio."
The acquisition furthers Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP's goal of providing converged infrastructure, integrating servers, storage, networking, management, facilities and services.
The company says its "Converged Infrastructure" will enable clients to simplify their networks and deploy edge-to-core network fabrics to improve IT service delivery capabilities.
The deal strengthens HP's play against the incumbent network market leaders like Cisco, Juniper and Brocade.
It expands the buyer's Ethernet offerings and adds routing solutions to its portfolio.
It also gives a shot in the arm to HP's position in the Chinese market, where Marlborough, Mass.-based 3Com enjoys a strong standing.
HP did not release further details on how the two companies' products will be integrated.
