Specialist UK value-added distributor, Bell Micro has announced that it has joined forces with HP to launch GoinGreen', an initiative designed to help resellers deploy greener IT infrastructures. Initially focused on the data center, GoinGreen offers consultancy on consolidation, with a particular emphasis on blade servers and virtualisation.
"Data centers are under increasing pressure to reduce carbon footprints. A fully equipped data center of just 30,000 square feet will consume enough electricity to create 44,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in just a year, explains Antony Young, director of services and security at Bell Micro.
"Despite the increased awareness on environmental issues, it's not always easy for organisations to know where, or how, to start a green initiative. The opportunities for Bell Micro business partners to embrace green IT are extensive as customers start to look at the issue from a physical infrastructure perspective as well as a holistic, how do I manage my IT strategy' point of view. So, in addition to considering leading edge technologies such as HP BladeSystem, IT decision makers are also now interested in looking at initiatives around virtualisation, consolidation and information lifecycle management which can themselves form part of a wider technology green strategy.
HP Smart Cooling Solutions also offers a series of data center power and cooling assessments. The entry-level Thermal Quick Assessment offers a smaller scale investment that results in recommendations and best practices geared for short and long-term cooling efficiency. The offerings then scale up through an intermediate service to the comprehensive assessment that provides 3D modeling of the entire data center supply and return air flows. This includes impact data on room and rack configuration, infrastructure management practices, and failure scenarios as well as zone mapping to optimise the placement of equipment in a data center.
