The UK's Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has claimed it will save up to £1.5 billion in energy and other associated costs by 2011, following an IT refresh and server consolidation.
Since 2005, the department has reduced its servers from 2,500 across six datacenters to 40 in two locations, and replaced140,000 PCs with more energy efficient models.
An annual power saving of 50GWh is anticipated from the programe, which has seen DWP transferring its entire infrastructure to supplier EDS as part of a managed hosting deal paid for on a per-user per-month basis. This utility model drives energy-efficiency incentives for EDS.
