Google has signed its second carbon removal agreement with Brazilian reforestation firm Mombak for 200,000 tons of carbon removal credits, tied to projects in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest.

In addition to the carbon credit purchase, Google DeepMind - the company’s AI research laboratory - will commence a research collaboration with Mombak utilizing its Perch AI to quantify the biodiversity benefits of reforestation, such as biodiversity and species diversity. Alongside the deal, the company will deploy microphones in the newly planted forests to monitor how Mombak’s efforts restore the ecosystem beyond just carbon.

Google's first deal with Mombak was signed back in September of last year and saw the company agree to purchase 50,000 tons of carbon credits by 2030.

Mombak is a Brazilian startup restoring deforested land in the Amazon to generate carbon credits. The company generates credits by measuring and verifying the CO2 absorbed as new forests grow. Its projects span thousands of hectares of degraded pastureland across northern Brazil.

In addition to the Google deal, Mombak became the first nature restoration project selected by the Symbiosis Coalition, which includes Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Salesforce.

The company was selected through the coalition's first request for proposal (RFP) launched last year, which aimed to provide a science-based, rigorous, and replicable framework for identifying and vetting promising, high-integrity nature-based carbon removals. The RFP focused on reforestation and agroforestry projects capable of delivering more than 500,000 tonnes of removals over ten years.

According to Symbiosis, the company was selected due to several key factors. This includes its focus on ecological integrity and biodiversity uplift, and it is aiming to restore degraded pastureland by planting a mix of 80+ native Amazonian species, including endangered species.

Another key factor was its direct land ownership and rural partnership, which has seen it commit to a 100-year durability term, combining two approaches: degraded land purchases to establish clear and undisputed land tenure and reduce reversal risk, and rural partnership agreements designed to support 100-year long-term partnerships.

Finally, Symbiosis highlighted the company’s community collaboration, with the project designed to deliver strong community benefits through thorough stakeholder mapping, prioritizing local hiring for roles across the project, and ensuring ongoing community consultation.

Google is not the first major hyperscaler to back Mombak. Last February, Microsoft committed to purchase 1.5 million tons of carbon credits from Mombak generated from projects in Pará, Brazil, by 2032.
