Google has signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Linea Energy for 500MW of solar power in Matagorda County, Texas.

Google will offtake power from the Duffy Solar Project, a 490MW solar and 235MW/470MWh battery energy storage project. Construction of the project is slated to commence in Q3 of this year.

According to Google, the PPA will support its data center operations in the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) market.

"This transaction highlights Linea's credibility amongst the largest hyperscalers and the ability to support affordability and grid reliability."

“By collaborating with Linea Energy to bring new low-cost power to the grid, we are helping to ensure the Lone Star State’s energy system remains affordable for local families and businesses,” added Will Conkling, director of Energy and Power, Google.

Linea is a San Francisco-based independent power producer and renewable developer. It was founded in 2022 and is backed by EnCap Investments. The company boasts a 7GW renewable energy pipeline. The deal with Google is its first with a major hyperscaler.

Google has signed several PPAs within the Texas market over recent years. In March, it inked two PPAs with Sunraycer Renewables tied to the Lupinus and Lupinus 2 solar projects in Texas.

Texas is becoming one of Google’s biggest markets. In November, the firm announced plans to invest some $40 billion in expanding its cloud and AI infrastructure in Texas through 2027. To power its operations in the state, the company has signed multiple PPAs, including agreements with Elawan Energy and X-Elio for a combined 165MW solar capacity, and another with SB Energy.
