AI cloud provider GMI Cloud is establishing a $500 million data center in Taiwan.
The data center is aimed to be operational by March 2026 and will house around 7,000 Nvidia GB300 GPUs across 96 racks. It will have a power capacity of around 16MW.
DCD has contacted GMI to clarify if this is a self-build or if the company is leasing data center capacity. Update: The company has confirmed it has leased space at Vantage Data Centers' Taipei facility.
The cluster will feature the Nvidia NVLink, Nvidia Quantum InfiniBand, and Nvidia Spectrum-X Ethernet networking as well as the BlueField GPUs.
"This data center is intended to become the blueprint for the heart of Asia's AI future," said Alex Yeh, CEO of GMI Cloud. "With thousands of next-generation Nvidia GPUs running in synchrony, our AI infrastructure helps turn the world's AI visions into reality."
The cluster will also be supported by Vast Data technology.
"This is where the world stops experimenting with AI, and starts industrializing it. What Vast Data and GMI Cloud are building in Taiwan represents the new blueprint for AI infrastructure, where performance, scalability, security, and simplicity converge," added Jeff Denworth, co-founder of Vast Data.
According to Yeh, the company's GPU utilization is already "almost full," necessitating ongoing expansion. The company is funding the data center with around $400m provided by several unnamed Taiwanese banks.
The company is aiming to raise another $200m by the end of 2025, according to Yeh.
Early customers of GMI Cloud in Taiwan include TECO, Wistron, and Trend Micro.
GMI also operates data centers in the US, elsewhere in Taiwan, and in Singapore, Thailand, and Japan. It is currently seeking to develop a 50MW data center in the US.
GMI launched in 2023 and is headquartered in California. It originally operated as a data center servicing Bitcoin mining; however, the company has since pivoted to AI. In November 2024, it secured $82m in Series A funding. According to its website, it currently operates from five data centers.
