GlobalConnect is developing several new subsea cables in the Baltic Sea.

The company this week said it has initiated a project to establish four new subsea cable systems in the Baltic Sea connecting Sweden, Estonia, and Finland.

New subsea cables totaling some ~300km (186.4 miles) will be constructed between Gotland, Sweden, and the Estonian islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, before extending inland through Estonia via Tallinn, and then across the Gulf of Finland to Helsinki.

The company will also deploy around 250km (155.3 miles) of terrestrial fiber routes in Estonia. The new routes will effectively create a ~550 km (341.7 miles) long-haul route, adding new routes for long-haul capacity offerings.

Set to go live in 2027, the project will total around €40 million ($46.7m), of which €15 million ($17.5m) has been secured from the CEF2-project (Connecting Europe Facility).

”We aim to deliver digital infrastructure, futureproofing the Nordics. This requires continuous expansion to keep pace with demand. We’re seeing a rapid increase in the need for secure, high-capacity fiber infrastructure—driven by the fast growth of major data centers and AI hotspots across the region. The route between Sweden and Estonia is underserved, with existing infrastructure being 30 years old. This new option will allow more traffic to flow, create resilience, and offer lower latency,” says Pär Jansson, SVP GlobalConnect Carrier.

GlobalConnect operates a 244,000km (151,614 miles) fiber network across Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, and Finland. It also offers 35,000 sqm (376,735 sq ft) of data center space across 17 facilities in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Germany.

In July, the company announced plans for a new subsea cable between Sweden and Finland, via Åland, which will be completed in 2026. With all routes combined, GlobalConnect will offer a 1,250 km (776.7 miles) fiber ring in the Baltic Sea.

Founded in 1998, EQT Infrastructure has been GlobalConnect’s majority shareholder since 2016, with Mubadala joining as a minority investor in 2022.
