GI Partners, an investment firm that holds large stakes in data center providers Telx and The Planet, has expanded its data center investment portfolio. On Tuesday, data center service provider SoftLayer Technologies announced that GI has sponsored the buyout of SoftLayer by its management team.
Menlo Park, Calif.-based GI and the data center provider's management have purchased all equity in Dallas, Texas-based SoftLayer, according to a news release. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
"SoftLayer has taken a visionary model and created a company for the future of hosting," Rick Magnuson, executive managing director at GI, said in a statement. "We are excited to bring additional resources and experience to help SoftLayer leverage its strategic position in the expanding global data center services market."
SoftLayer provides a variety of hosting services, including cloud-based Infrastructure-as-a-Service offerings, as well as dedicated servers. The company currently operates four data centers, two in Dallas, one in Seattle, Wash., and one in Washington, D.C. Its total current compute capacity is about 60,000 servers.
GI is lead investor in both Telx and The Planet. The company also holds a small stake in the Denver, Colo.-based data center provider ViaWest. GI became a ViaWest investor when it joined Oak Hill Capital Partners in acquisition of the company from its previous owners, a group that included Trinity Equity Investors and Goldman Sachs, among other
