German construction company Hochtief has launched an Edge data center near Düsseldorf.

The 9,000 sqm (96,875 sq ft) facility is located in the Heilingenhaus Innovation Park, named after the eponymous town located northeast of Düsseldorf in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

This is the first data center to become operational under the ‘Yexio’ brand, constituted by Hochtief Private Public Partnership (Hochtief PPP) and server manufacturer Thomas-Krenn AG. The facility will form part of a network of 15 Edge data centers across Germany.

The end user is Yorizon Cloud, a cloud joint venture operated by the same partnership.

Yexio is backed by Palladio Partners, an investor in domestic and international infrastructure assets on behalf of German pension funds. It has some €10.1 billion ($11.8bn) in assets under management.

This launch is part of Hochtief’s international data center expansion – in April, Yexio broke ground on another Edge data center in Bad Lippspringe, and in June, Hochtief launched a data center division in the UK under the name Hochtief Data Center Partner Limited.

Hochtief is owned by Spanish construction firm ACS, which is best known in the US as the owner of Turner Construction. The company owns or has stakes in Hochtief, Turner Construction, Dragados, CIMIC, Leighton Asia, Ventia, and numerous others. Data center clients include Meta and Vantage.

Traditionally known as a construction firm serving clients, ACS has recently pivoted to developing its own data centers that can be leased or sold to customers. The company has acquired land and/or filed for data center campuses in Spain and the US, and the company has suggested it has a potential development pipeline totaling around 5GW globally.
