GalaxyVisions and its subsidiary ColoGuard have reduced usage of mechanical air conditioning at their shared Brooklyn data center by 75% since implementation of airside economization at the facility two years ago.
GalaxyVisions VP of operations Ruben Magurdumov said deployment of an airside economizer at the company’s facility in the New York City borough gave the company substantial efficiency advantages, even with this winter’s unusually warm weather.
“Even with spring-like temperatures, we’re seeing huge advantages to our green campaign,” he said. “We’re not only reducing our carbon footprint but also generating real savings that we can invest in our business and pass on to our customers in the form of the most affordable rates in the industry.”
In addition to giving the 15,000 sq ft data center’s chillers a break, the data center’s ambient temperature went down from 75F to 64F, which may further safeguard some IT equipment from overheating.
Airside economization is a common way of reducing a data center’s overall energy use by reducing the amount of energy it takes to cool air that’s delivered to servers on the data center floor. It is done simply by pulling in outside air when its temperature is low enough.
GalaxyVisions started its economization initiative in late 2010.
The company provides managed services at its data center. ColoGuard is its brand for colocation services.
