Plans for a data center campus have been given the green light in Hermantown, Minnesota.

First reported by local press, including Fox21, the Hermantown city council this week voted 4-0 to rezone land for a potential data center.

The development would total four 300,000 sq ft (27,870 sqm) buildings on a 403-acre parcel close to the Arrowhead Substation, bounded to the north by Morris Thomas Road, to the east by Midway Road, and to the west by Solway Road.

Real estate firm Mortenson had put in the rezoning request for the development, reportedly known as Project Loon. Officials have said a US-based “Fortune 50” company is involved via the Harmony Group LLC affiliate, but haven’t named the firm. Construction on the $650 million project could start in 2027 and would be built out over eight to ten years.

News of the data center surfaced earlier this month. More than 300 people reportedly attended the six-hour meeting on Monday night.

Hermantown is a suburb of Duluth, a port city in eastern Minnesota. It is not a data center hotspot.

Most of the state’s data centers are located around Minneapolis. Meta is developing in the state, and Amazon Web Services previously planned a data center in Minnesota but withdrew plans earlier this year.
