A land parcel formerly home to a Walmart in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, could become a data center.

The city’s plan commission is set to consider two planning proposals that would allow for the construction of an “indoor self-storage facility and data processing/computer services/computer research facility” at 5825 W. Hope Avenue.

According to documents submitted to the City of Milwaukee ahead of a city plan commission meeting on May 18, a data center would take up approximately 19,000 sq ft (1,765 sqm) of the 160,000 sq ft (14,865 sqm) building, now vacant after the supermarket giant chose to shutter the branch back in 2016.

The facility will be “specifically focused on High Performance Computing,” and will use a closed-loop glycol cooling system.

The data center will form part of a 108,000 sq ft (10,033 sqm) self-service storage facility.

The backers of the project are AFS Milwaukee LLC, which bought the site back in June 2022, real estate company Gorman & Company, and the City of Milwaukee.

Details about the facility’s potential IT capacity were not provided.

Milwaukee is located in southern Wisconsin on the western shore of Lake Michigan. Most of the state’s data centers are concentrated in and around the area.
