The first group of stocks has commenced trading out of NYSE Euronext's new data center in Mahwah, N.J., the stock-exchange operator's spokesman confirmed.
The first 19 companies' stocks are now being traded out of the Mahwah facility, which will eventually support trading of all stocks currently traded on the New York Stock Exchange and NYSE Amex exchanges. All stocks traded on the two exchanges ÔÇô about 4,000 total ÔÇô are expected to be migrated to Mahwah by the end of August.
Migration of the rest of NYSE-operated exchanges is expected to be complete in the early months of 2011. NYSE Euronext will move out of the data centers that have been housing its infrastructure, where its leases are approaching expiration.
The 400,000 sq ft Mahwah facility will offer about 100,000 sq ft of data center space at full build-out. The first launch phase was expected to include first three of the five 20,000 sq ft modules, leaving the remaining 40,000 sq ft of data center space for future expansion. The data center has up to 28MW of power available.
Most of the colocation space the new facility offers has been leased out, the company spokesman said. Most of NYSE's colocation customers have installed their equipment at the data center and can now take advantage of physical proximity to the servers supporting the first 19 stocks traded there.
This is one of two new NYSE data centers. The second one, in Basildon, UK, is also a 400,000 sq ft facility, but its data center floor is broken into seven 10,000 sq ft pods, providing 3MW of power each. The UK data center has not been launched.
