A fire broke out at the construction site of Bitdeer’s Massillon, Ohio, cryptomine data center site.
The blaze, which occurred on Tuesday (November 11) afternoon at the planned Bitcoin mining operation, was dealt with by firefighters but impacted two buildings of the planned complex located at 1115 Industrial Avenue SW.
The fire chief of the Massillon Fire Department, which extinguished the fire around pm reported no injuries. He added that two of the 24 buildings under construction had suffered damage, but may still be salvageable.
No servers or other specialized equipment had been installed in either structure. He found that the fire started in a building at the Southeast corner of the site before the wind carried flames to an adjoining building.
“Site management is investigating to determine the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage,” Bitdeer said in a statement on X.
Investigators have found no signs of arson and are exploring how construction activity may have started the fire.
Bitdeer CEO Jihan Wu said the fire was caused by welding operations.
"Whether the transformers were damaged or not will need to be further checked. Buildings need to be replaced with new one," he added.
Singapore-based Bitdeer is still determining how the fire has affected its construction progress, having previously projected a first-quarter 2026 completion window for its 221-megawatt site in its October production update.
Bitdeer purchased around 19 acres for the new facility through its subsidiary White Tail Creek LLC for $1.6 million in 2023.
Earlier this month, on the 4th of November, the company announced the completion of its 500MW in Jigmeling, Bhutan, which was celebrated with a basketball match between Bitdeer staff and the Vajra Builders, the construction group that delivered the project.
Also, this month the company hit a self-mining hashrate of 41.2EH/s, ahead of its 40EH/s target, having mined 511 bitcoins, a 13 percent month-on-month rise. In its Q3 earnings documents, it reported revenue of $169.7 million, up 173.6 percent against the prior year, with gross profit rising to $40.8m.
