US fiber operator Zayo announced an 8,000 route-mile network expansion – the largest in its history – in response to meeting AI-driven capacity.
Backed by what is described as a major AI infrastructure customer, the route incorporates more than 15 million new and overbuilt fiber miles.
This comprises six new long-haul fiber routes totaling 3,000 route miles and overbuilds of nine high-capacity corridors spanning more than 5,000 route miles.
The new routes in construction are from Las Vegas to Reno, Nevada; Denver to Chicago; Dallas to Austin, Texas; Columbus, Ohio, to Indianapolis; Atlanta to Ashburn, Virginia; and Kansas City to Omaha.
The expansion comes after Zayo announced plans in January to build 5,000 new route miles by 2030. Zayo claimed that after 18 months, it has built and overbuilt projects underway spanning more than 15,000 route miles and around 20 million fiber miles, with construction underway or commencing on many of these routes.
Zayo said the level of investment is "critical" to support AI-related bandwidth demand, which is projected to grow by up to six-times by 2030 without becoming a constraint.
