Cloud computing and colocation provider Expedient plans to spend $4.5 million on expanding and upgrading its Carmel, Indiana data center.

The expansion will add 3,500 square feet (325 sq m) of data center space, bringing it to 26,000 sq ft (2,415 sq m) of total raised floor space, along with 12,500 sq ft (1,161 sq m) of electrical/mechanical rooms, and more than 15,000 sq ft (1,394 sq m) of office, common area and convenience spaces.

The company also plans to replace two uninterruptable power supply (UPS) systems, install new computer room air conditioning units (CRAC) and power distribution units (PDU) and make general design improvements.

“We’re proud of our continued growth in the Indianapolis area,” said Jim Kothe, Expedient’s regional VP.

“Our investment in the Indianapolis data center demonstrates our absolute commitment to supporting our customers’ evolving needs, and further solidifies our position as an industry-leading regional provider of IaaS solutions.”

This marks the third time the facility has been upgraded since its launch in September 2013, with all three upgrades totaling $14.5 million.

In addition to the Indiana site, Expedient operates data centers in Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Columbus, Memphis and Pittsburgh.

The company also developed its own colocation cage design to save wasted data center space that could instead be used for additional cabinets. It claims that the SlimeLine Cage can achieve up to a 40 percent savings over the cost of a standard colocation cage by minimizing wasted space.
