The European Union (EU) has launched two initiatives to support the bloc's energy system in meeting the energy demands from the data center sector.
The first initiative seeks to bring together a range of stakeholders, including data center developers, energy companies, and public authorities, to integrate data centers into the EU energy system. Exact details on how the process works have not been disclosed. According to reports, 14 European associations signed a Declaration of Intent, while six companies signed a Declaration of Support, demonstrating their readiness to begin implementation.
In addition, the EU also announced the launch of its AI grids project. The project is a major EU initiative that seeks to develop the first pan-European AI foundation model for electricity grids. The project brings together 48 partners, including grid operators, research institutes, and tech firms, to improve the management, planning, and resilience of energy systems.
The project has three main focus areas. These include the creation of an AI framework to analyze complex, structural, temporal, and operational grid datasets, in addition to developing more effective forecasting capabilities for energy generation and congestion management. Finally, the initiative will focus on supporting the establishment of secure, interoperable data-sharing frameworks aligned with the Common European Energy Data Space.
The EU currently has approximately 6.4GW of installed data center capacity across its footprint, which rises to 9GW when accounting for the broader European region. Current estimates indicate capacity will more than double by 2030.
The bloc recently proposed the Cloud and AI Development Act (CADA) and the Strategic Roadmap for Digitalization and AI in Energy. The two policies seek to triple data center capacity in Europe over the next five to seven years, via fast-track permitting and better integration into clean energy systems.
The Strategic Roadmap for Digitalization and AI in Energy mandates "tripartite agreements" between data center operators, the energy sector, and public authorities, in order to ‘sustainably’ link digital infrastructure to local power grids and improve demand-side flexibility
