Equity Bank Uganda has completed the migration of its core data center operations to a third-party facility.

The bank shared on X in late February that it had completed the migration efforts and was now hosting its core operations in a Raxio Data Center in Namanve, Uganda.

Equity Bank wrote: "This strategic move strengthens our system resilience, enhances security, and ensures improved service reliability for all our customers nationwide. We are grateful for the support of the Bank of Uganda, which has recognized this development as a vital step in safeguarding the national payments ecosystem as financial services become increasingly digitized."

As reported by Uganda's The Observer, the move is also hoped to help improve transaction speeds in the country, improve data security, and ensure continued uptime.

Details about the bank's prior data center footprint have not been provided. DCD has reached out for further information.

Claver Serumaga, executive director at Equity Bank Uganda, said: "Our customers require secure, efficient banking at all times. This move strengthens platforms like Equity Online for Business and enables real- time payments, collections, trade finance, and treasury services.”

He added: "This investment is about our clients. We have over two million customers, and we need to have real impact – now we can innovate faster to meet their needs.”

Raxio's data center is located within the Namanve Industrial Park in Kampala. The facility spans 1,000 sqm (10,764 sq ft) and has the capacity for up to 250 racks and 1.5MW of IT power. The data center was launched in 2021, and claimed to be Uganda's first Tier-III certified carrier- and cloud-neutral data center. According to DataCenterMap, all of Uganda's data centers are located in and around Kampala. Operators other than Raxio include MTN and CFTS, with just four sites listed.

Raxio's data centers are located across Africa, with facilities in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Cote d'Ivoire, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Uganda.
