Colocation company Equinix announced the extension of its Equinix Carrier Ethernet Exchange to three new European markets –the key financial hubs of Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris.

 

Speaking with DatacenterDynamics, Equinix general manager for global Network and Content Service Providers Jim Poole said more locations will follow, including Hong Kong, Seatlle, Singapore and Zurich.

 

"The markets announced today are obviously the biggest data markets in Europe, and they have the most carrier presence and most demand," Poole said.

 

"We will have new rollouts in the second quarter of 2011, when we will roll out an additional 10 sites."

 

Equinix’s Carrier Ethernet Exchange already operates in 10 markets, where clients are offered a global, network-neutral service that Equinix says boasts improved quality and removes the cost and complexity of facilitating commercial transactions between Layer 2 Ethernet networks.

 

Today, such connections are being taken up by companies working heavily with data, such as those providing financial traders with information required to carry out algorithmic trading.

 

"It is about the interest in diversity of providers," Poole said. "One of the advantages of the exchange is the ability to identify potential partners relatively quickly because there is a pre-provisioned platform on which other customers sit." 

 

Equinix said 16 new customers have taken on its Ethernet services in recent times. These customers will also have access to a new service released today called Marketplace, which connects buyers and sellers of Ethernet-based services globally.

 

The new customers include: 2Connect, Allstream, FiberLight, Global Telecom &Technology, Glowpoint, Internet Solutions, IP Networks, Layer42, Megapth, Nimbus Exchange, PacNet, Peerless Network, SESE Telecom, Virtela, Voxel and XO.
