Equinix has launched a new hyperscale data center in Tokyo, Japan.
The company this week announced the opening of TY13x. Located in the Inzai region and adjacent to TY12x, TY13x provides 8MW in the first phase and will provide a total of 36MW at full build-out.
Equinix first partnered with Singapore's GIC sovereign wealth fund in October 2019 to develop hyperscale facilities under the xScale label. Plans for three Japanese xScale facilities in Tokyo and Osaka were announced in April 2020; TY12x opened in March 2021, and OS2x opened later that year.
The company has also partnered with PGIM for xScale developments.
To date, Equinix has opened 12 xScale data centers globally, including TY12x and TY13x in Tokyo, OS2x in Osaka, Japan; SY9x in Sydney, Australia; DB5x in Dublin, Ireland; FR9x and FR11x in Frankfurt, Germany; PA8x and PA9x in Paris, France; LD11x and LD13x in London, UK; and SP5x in São Paulo, Brazil.
The company’s hyperscale portfolio currently totals around 175MW, with another nine xScale builds under development totaling more than 80MW between now and 2024. In total, the company aims to develop 36 xScale facilities totaling 720MW.
In Japan, Equinix has leased approximately 20MW of capacity across the TY12x and OS2x facilities. According to the company’s Q1 2023 earnings presentation, TYK13x hasn’t been pre-leased.
