Equinix is continuing its interconnect march with the launch of Fabric Geo Zones, a sovereignty-focused solution designed to keep data within defined geographic boundaries.

Hot on the heels of its Distributed AI Hub platform, the colocation giant unveiled a compliance mechanism that focuses on the network layer.

A series of defined "Geo Zones" forces rerouted data to remain in those areas, meaning when customers leverage Equinix’s interconnection services, they’re given increased control over what gets sent where, ensuring information stays within approved jurisdictions.

“Sovereignty can't be a setting you configure inside a single cloud. Global enterprises must enforce sovereignty at the network layer, across every cloud, provider, and path simultaneously,” Arun Dev, VP for digital interconnection at Equinix, explained.

Digital sovereignty is not a new concept, but one that’s soared to the top of mind for businesses across the globe.

Equinix’s latest launch looks to take advantage of that demand, with the colocation giant positioning it as an improved alternative to traditional cloud-based or software overlay solutions. Instead, the vendor touts greater control over user data when customers move information across borders with differing rules around data handling and processing.

The expansion of Fabric Geo Zones is part of Equinix's ongoing investment in reimagining networking for the AI era, following the launch of Fabric Intelligence and the Distributed AI Hub. Together, these capabilities provide customers with a foundation for distributed AI and multicloud environments.

Fabric Geo Zones comes as part of Equinix’s wider Fabric network, which spans almost 80 metros worldwide. The offering is available at a premium tier and priced at a premium to standard virtual circuits.

It’s available in preview in jurisdictions including Australia, Brazil, the US, and the UK. Availability in the European Union (EU) – arguably the most vocal venue when it comes to data sovereignty – will drop in June.

"Equinix Fabric Geo Zones is the only solution that enforces geographic boundaries as a property of the network itself. Traffic either flows along compliant paths, or it's blocked,” Dev added. “That's why enterprises across industries trust Equinix to move data across clouds without compromising sovereignty."
