Equinix has bought 5,597 sqm of land in Mumbai’s Chandivali for INR 155 crore ($18m).
First reported by The Hindustan Times, the operator has bought the parcel of land along with a building on the site.
Equinix said in a statement: “Today, Equinix operates three International Business Exchange data centers in Mumbai, called MB1, MB2, and MB4. The recently acquired land is the location of one of our existing data centers, MB2. We will continue to invest in this market to support India’s growing digital economy.”
Further details have not been shared.
Equinix announced an investment of $86 million to build a new data center in Mumbai in June 2022. At the time, the firm also acquired a four-acre parcel of land in the Chandivali area.
The new data center, dubbed MB3, will be Equinix’s third facility in Mumbai and located adjacent to Equinix’s MB2 facility.
Equinix added that MB3 will provide an initial capacity of more than 1,375 cabinets, and more than 4,150 cabinets at full build-out. The operator has also announced an expansion in Chennai, which will see an investment of $65 million in the first phase and a total site capacity of 4,950 cabinets at full build-out.
The site was sold by Overseas Packing Industries Pvt Ltd and Warden Hyforce Pvt Ltd.
Mumbai is currently home to operators such as Iron Mountain, Digital Edge, NTT, Yotta, STT GDC, Princeton Digital Group, CtrlS, Tata Communications, and Airtel’s Nxtra.
A recent report from JLL said the Indian data center industry is set to grow by 66 percent by 2026, adding 604MW of capacity.
