Global data center colocation giant Equinix has bought a major carrier hotel in Frankfurt it says is “one of the busiest network nodes in Europe.”
The company bought the building, referred to as Kleyer 90 for its address at Kleyerstrasse 90, from a Berlin-based private investor for an undisclosed sum. The deal follows Equinix' acquisition last year of Ancotel GmbH, a data center provider based in the building.
Equinix' Frankfurt data center campus has been partially based in Kleyer 90 as well.
Eric Schwartz, president, Equinix EMEA, said, “The acquisition of Kleyer 90 is the natural next step following our successful integration of Ancotel last year and will give our customers greater confidence when planning ahead in this exceptionally busy network hub.
“We can now offer long-term continuity and room to grow, and we plan to invest in the building to enhance security and infrastructure management.”
The company said the acquisition was important strategically because of Frankfurt's position as “the connectivity gateway between Western and Eastern Europe.” The building is also home to DE-CIX, one of the world's largest Internet Exchanges.
The campus consists of two interconnected Equinix data centers and houses about 450 networks from more than 70 countries and 150 enterprises, cloud companies and IT service providers. Customers have instant Layer 2 access to German and international locations through Equinix' Ethernet exchange.
They also have direct access within the building to the DE-CIX.
