Retail collocation and interconnection services provider Equinix reported a substantial year-over-year revenue growth in the first quarter of 2010 earlier this week.

The company also announced plans to launch a new data center in Amsterdam and to build a second facility in Dallas, Texas.

The Foster City, Calif.-based provider reported revenue of $248.6 million in the first quarter of 2010 - approximately a 25 percent increase year-over-year.

Its net income during the quarter was $14.2 million, compared with $15.5 million reported for the first quarter of 2009.

Equinix plans to launch first phase of its second data center in the Amsterdam market on May 1, bringing online capacity for 480 cabinet equivalents - a $40 million investment.

The provider plans to complete second phase of the facility in the third quarter, which will add 520 cabinet equivalents.

The third phase, whose launch date has not been determined, will add another 500 cabinet equivalents.

The data center, in development since November 2009, is the company's fourth in the Netherlands, including facilities in Enschede and Zwolle.

"Amsterdam is a key location, not just for Dutch businesses, but for many regional and global service providers and enterprises that are eager to increase business operations in this important market," Equinix Netherlands General Manager Michiel Eielts said in a statement.

"Since opening our AM1 IBX data center in 2008, we have seen a steady increase in demand from both local and international organizations."

Equinix's second data center in Dallas will increase the company's footprint in the market by 40,000 square feet, or 420 cabinet equivalents.

The provider plans to complete the first $25 million phase in the first quarter of 2011. The second phase, whose build-out timeframe will depend on future market conditions, will double the cabinet-equivalent capacity of the phase announced this week.

The new facility will be built next to the company's existing 61,500 square foot Dallas data center.

"This expansion demonstrates the strong customer demand for Equinix services in the Dallas market," Equinix US President Peter Ferris said in a statement.

"The Dallas-Fort Worth market is one of the largest concentrations of companies headquartered in the United States, including several data-centric industries, such as telecommunications and IT services."
