Andrew Fanara, head of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star programme, has said he believes that government recommendations for purchasing decisions will be made available to data center operators/managers by as early as next year.
In a keynote address to the AFCOM Data Center World Conference in Dallas on 17 September, Fanara spoke about the impending release of benchmarks and labels that have been developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) the Standard Performance Evaluation Corp. (SPEC), Green Grid and the Uptime Institute Inc.
Such metrics will help managers determine the energy efficiency of their facilities and influence the purchasing of the most energy-efficient servers commercially available from vendors.
