Elon Musk’s rocket and satellite Internet company SpaceX plans to invest in his generative AI business xAI.
The Wall Street Journal reports that SpaceX will pump $2 billion into the Grok company, as part of a broader $5bn round. SpaceX previously loaned money to Tesla and helped fund his acquisition of social media platform X.
Back in March, Musk merged xAI with X, in a deal that valued the artificial intelligence company at $80bn and the social media company at $33bn (for a total of $113bn).
xAI's Grok is currently used for customer support on SpaceX’s satellite Internet service, Starlink. The company plans to roll Grok out to Musk's other business Tesla, making it available in the company's cars.
Last year, Musk polled his X followers on whether Tesla should invest $5bn into xAI, with the majority voting yes. He said this week: "If it was up to me, Tesla would have invested in xAI long ago. We will have a shareholder vote on the matter."
Earlier this month, xAI tweaked Grok to be less "politically correct." The system began spouting antisemitic tropes and referred to itself as MechaHitler.
