EllaLink has landed a subsea cable in Mauritania.

The company this week announced the landing of a new subsea cable branch in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, calling the moment a “defining step for the country's digital sovereignty, resilience and long-term competitiveness.”

Philippe Dumont, CEO of EllaLink, said: “Together with our Mauritanian partners, we are ready to develop new services, regional extensions, and cross-border projects that will turn this infrastructure into a true engine for growth and cooperation across the Atlantic.”

EllaLink first announced plans for a 670 km (416-mile) extension of the EllaLink system in July 2025. The cable lands at a new cable landing station.

The project is co-funded by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility.

The original EllaLink cable was laid between late 2020 and 2021, running from Fortaleza in Brazil via Cabo Verde and Madeira to Sines in Portugal, with a branch to Morocco. The 5,900 km (3,666 miles) cable offers around 100Tbps across four fiber pairs. A new extension to French Guiana is also in development.

Only one subsea cable currently lands in Mauritania, with the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) system landing in Nouakchott. Built around 2012, ACE runs from France down to South Africa, but has been hit with multiple cable cuts and issues over the years.

Ahmed Salem Bede, Minister of Digital Transformation and Modernization of Administration of Mauritania, said: “Through this connection, Mauritania strengthens its capacity to secure its communications with the world, diversifies its international access points, and guarantees the stability of its digital services. We are moving from the status of a mere recipient to that of a full participant in the global telecommunications architecture.”
