Spanish renewable energy developer Elawan Energy has signed a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Spanish telecommunications firm Cellnex.

The PPA will see Elawan supply Cellnex with over 400,000MWh of renewable energy per year from three solar farms in Albacete and a wind farm in Cuenca, with a total combined capacity of 200MW.

“This agreement represents a key strategic advancement for Elawan in the renewable energy sector,” Elawan said in a press release.

“This agreement, signed with Elawan, allows us to strengthen our commitment to sustainability and reinforce our emissions reduction goals, and also ensures that we can contribute to the addition of new renewable capacity to the national energy grid, something which benefits not only our own company, but also contributes to global decarbonization goals,” said Mila Rey, global head of energy at Cellnex.

Elawan has more than 1.8GW of capacity in operation across 16 countries and 1.1GW in advanced development. The company was acquired by Japanese corporate group Orix in 2021 and aims to have 3GW of renewable assets in operation by 2025.

Cellnex has committed to reducing and neutralizing all its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In 2020, it signed a 10-year PPA with Endesa to supply 100 percent of Cellnex’s energy in Spain.

Cellnex currently manages a portfolio of more than 138,000 tower sites – including planned roll-outs up to 2030 – in 12 European countries. The firm also operates four data center sites in Spain and 24 high telecom & data towers throughout the Netherlands - plus a larger Dutch data center at the media park in Hilversum. It also has a portfolio of Edge data center sites in France.

Cellnex has signed several high-profile deals over 2024. In August, it exited the Austrian market, agreeing to sell 100 percent of its Austrian unit to a consortium comprised of Vauban Infrastructure Partners, EDF Invest, and MEAG for €803 million ($877m).
