The SunFire T2000 server uses new CoolThread technology to provide exceptional performance for multithreaded applications.
As data center operations expand, many IT managers are challenged to fit more services into existing space, without significantly increasing power consumption or cooling requirements. This is especially difficult for companies deploying systems with faster multicore processors, which require more of everything. Sun Microsystems' SunFire T2000 server, with its new UltraSPARC T1 processor with CoolThread technology, addresses this challenge.
Sun sent a preproduction T2000 server to our Syracuse University Real-World Labs®. The unit contained an eight-core UltraSPARC T1, a chip once code-named Niagara, running at 1 GHz. Each core can execute four threads--that's 32 simultaneous thread executions in one piece of silicon, resulting in exceptional performance for multithreaded applications. Chip multithreading closes the gap between ever-faster CPU clock cycles, which double in speed about every two years, and lagging DRAM speeds, because it lets the processor get to work on one thread's tasks while waiting for memory access on the others.
